The Sleep Disorders Breathing

The Sleep Disorders Breathing (SDB) are characterized by narrowing of the Upper Airways, associated with muscle relaxation during sleep.

This causes a decrease in the passage of air during night breaths and snoring due to the vibrations of the Upper Airways. These decreases can cause apneas and hypopneas. These breathing events can occur frequently during the night. This is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).

Pasuldo® : the role of the position

The role of the position during sleep is fundamental. Indeed, muscle relaxation during sleep will have a deleterious effect on Upper Airways, and this impact will be greater in the dorsal position. In this position, the soft parts of the mouth like the uvula, tongue or soft palate, will be thrown towards the back of the throat and reduce the passage of air. This decrease will cause snoring, hypopneas and apneas.

So do not sleep on your back ...

Many sleep specialists have often referred to the aggravating factor of the dorsal position on snoring and OSA. Unfortunately, due to the lack of therapeutic device, the positional treatment of SDB was almost never proposed. The Pasuldo Company has developed and patented a new Medical Device for the Positional Sleep Disorders Breathing: The Pasuldo.

Pasuldo® : what is it ?

This is a harness holding a dense foam cylinder on the back to create discomfort and prevent the user from standing on the back. The Pasuldo will create a discomfort in the dorsal positioning, stall the user on the side and play the role of alarm of the subconscious in case the sleeper would like to get back on the back.

The medical recommendations:

The Society of Pneumology of French Language in partnership with the French Societies of Cardiology, ENT, Physiology and the French Society of Research and Medicine of Sleep have written Recommendations for Clinical Practice that address the treatment Positional: "Positional treatment, which consists of avoiding supine during sleep, is recommended in mild or moderate positional OSAS ... The efficacy of positional therapy must be clinically verified by polygraphy or polysomnography". The Canadian Society of Sleep published in 2008, a booklet on the interest of sleeping on the side.

Some Clinical Data:

Non-apneic snorers snore more when they are on their backs. Apneas are often more severe when they sleep on their backs. (1) OSAS is positional in one out of two cases for light SAOS and in one case in five for moderate OSA. (2) Positional treatment (sleeping on the side) of patients with mild and moderate positional OSAS is as effective as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). (3)
